Mountain Lions tame Golden Tigers 3-1

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Young Harris College scored twice in the second half as they defeated Brenau University 3-1 in a women’s soccer match Saturday (Sept. 10) afternoon at Frances Wood Wilson Soccer Field.

The Mountain Lions won their second consecutive match and improved to 2-1-0 while the Golden Tigers remained winless in five matches (0-3-2). Young Harris returns to action Wednesday (Sept. 14) when they host Mars Hill College in a 5 p.m. match at Wilson Field.

Brenau jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 2:39 mark as Kayla Madsen converted a Kirsty Smith corner kick. However, the Mountain Lions tied the match at 1 with less than nine minutes remaining in the first half. Allison Burnham served the ball in to Emily Villas, who blasted a shot over the head of Brenau goalkeeper Tori Brown, who notched 17 saves. It was Villas’ first goal of the season.

Young Harris took the lead for good in the 71st minute as Haley Holderfield chipped a shot over Brown’s head after Rachel Wilkes crossed the ball to Holderfield. The Mountain Lions, who outshot the Golden Tigers 22-11, added an insurance goal in the 83rd minute when Whitney Thomas followed her own missed shot. It was the first goal of the season for both Holderfield and Thomas.

Young Harris goalkeeper Kelsey Cunningham recorded eight saves.
