Monroe header clips Hawks 3-2

ROME, Ga. – Trevor Monroe’s header with 4:06 remaining propelled the Young Harris College men’s soccer team past Shorter University 3-2 Wednesday (Sept. 7) evening at Ben Brady Field.

The Mountain Lions improved to 2-0 while Young Harris handed the Hawks their first loss in four matches. Young Harris returns to action Saturday (Sept. 10) with a 1 p.m. match against Lander University in Greenwood, S.C.

With the match tied at 2 after Shorter’s Garry Perks scored at the 80:04 mark, Khurram Shazad collected the ball at the top of the box, turned his defender around and found Monroe at the back post. Monroe headed the ball past Shorter goalkeeper Ryan Edwards for his first goal of the season.

“I thought we played some very nice soccer tonight,” said McKeever. “Khurram Shazad was outstanding from start to finish. He caused them problems the entire match.”

Ilijia Ilic gave the Mountain Lions a 1-0 lead with just under seven minutes remaining in the first half on his team-leading fifth goal of the season off an assist from Mouhamed Bechir. Irvin Espinal tied the match at 1 in the 52nd minute before Young Harris retook the lead at the 62:36 mark. Ilic found Niall McCabe, who came free down the left side of the box and slid an attempt past the Shorter keeper.
