GREENWOOD, S.C. – Ashley Walker scored the golden goal in the 102nd minute as Young Harris College remained undefeated as the Mountain Lions recorded a 2-1 double-overtime victory over Lander University Saturday (Sept. 10) afternoon at the Jeff May Complex.
The Mountain Lions improved to 3-0-0 while the Senators fell to 1-1-1. Young Harris returns to action Wednesday (Sept. 14) when they host Mars Hill College, which is currently ranked No. 17 in the latest NSCAA NCAA Division II rankings, in a 2:30 p.m. match at the Frances Wood Wilson Soccer Field.
Walker's winning shot – his first of the season – came off one of his own missed headers. Walker also added an assist on Darren Shaw's header in the 40th minute that tied the match at 1.
"Ashley Walker stepped up and led like a true captain," said head coach Mark McKeever. "We dominated possession, shots and corner kicks and it's a very satisfying and deserved result."
Lander took an early 1-0 lead when Brett Jankouskas raced up the left side and fired in a goal from 20 yards out at the 15:27 mark.
Young Harris outshot Lander, 17-5, and led in corner kicks, 13-2. Lander goalkeeper Scott Playle tallied five saves, while Wezly Barnard had one for the Mountain Lions.
