YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Emily Villas had a goal and an assist as the Young Harris women’s soccer team shut out the University of West Alabama 2-0 Friday (Sept. 30) afternoon at the Frances Wood Wilson Soccer Field.
The Mountain Lions registered their second consecutive shutout and fifth of the season as they improved to 7-2-0 while the Tigers, who are in their inaugural season as a program, slipped to 3-6-0. Young Harris has a quick turnaround as they travel to Swannanoa, N.C., for a 3 p.m. contest against Warren Wilson College Saturday (Oct. 1).
Young Harris took a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute as Kaylin Canup got a through ball from Villas on the right side of the box and knock it past West Alabama goalkeeper Jess Martin into the left corner of the goal for her second strike of the season.
Villas scored with five minutes remaining in the half as she collected a loose ball in the box and blasted it into the top right corner of the goal to give the Mountain Lions a 2-0 advantage. It was Villas’ fourth goal of the season.
The Tigers, who outshot Young Harris 11-10, mounted pressure on the Mountain Lions in the second half as they held a 7-5 edge in the final period. However, YHC goalkeeper Kelsey Cunningham notched her fourth shutout of the season as she recorded five of her seven saves in the second half.
