Lopes’ OT goal gives Young Harris 4-3 win over Sewanee

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Mika Lopes’ golden goal with 2:15 remaining in overtime helped the Young Harris College women’s soccer team past the University of the South 4-3 Friday (Sept. 23) evening at Puett Field.

The win pushed the Mountain Lions to 5-2-0 while the Tigers fell to 2-5-1. Young Harris returns to action Monday (Sept. 26) with a 7 p.m. contest against Tennessee Temple University in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Lopes blasted her third goal of the season into the top right corner of the goal past Tiger goalkeeper Virginia Zakas. The deciding goal came off a corner kick by Kelley Lyness.

The Mountain Lions forced the extra time after Emily Villas scored in the 76th minute to knot the score at 3. It was Villas’ second strike of 2011. Young Harris had jumped out to a 2-0 lead as Lauren Martin scored twice. Her first goal came in the 16th minute off a Haley Holderfield assist and the other was an unassisted goal in the 61st minute.

The Tigers scored three times over a 10-minute stretch to take a 3-2 lead. Lizzie Butler scored on a penalty kick 30 seconds after Martin’s goal and Jamie Samociuk added two goals for Sewanee.
