YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Clayton State University scored three times in the second half, including two goals by Matty Phillips, to take a 4-1 decision over Young Harris College in a men’s soccer match Wednesday (Sept. 21) afternoon at the Frances Wood Wilson Soccer Field.
The Lakers, who are ranked No. 15 in the latest NSCAA NCAA Division II Top 25 poll, improved to 5-2-0 while the Mountain Lions, who are ranked No. 6 in the Southeast Region poll, dropped their second consecutive match and fell to 5-2-0. Young Harris returns to action Sunday (Sept. 25) when they travel to Memphis, Tenn., for a noon Central time match against Christian Brothers University.
Phillips broke the 1-all tie with his first goal of the season at the 56:44 mark as he took a flick from Ryan Pugh and went down the center of the box and kicked it into the goal to give the Lakers a 2-1 lead. Phillips added a second goal 11 minutes later off a Roger Boniface assist. Clayton State, which outshot the Mountain Lions 14-6 in the second half, got its final strike off the foot of Pugh at the 87:30 mark.
Young Harris took a 1-0 lead at the 3:31 mark when Alex Rivera took a cross from Niall McCabe and knocked it into the left corner of the goal. Boniface leveled the match at 1 on a header off a Janny Rivera free kick.
