YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Michael Davis’ goal late in the first half was the difference as the University of North Carolina at Pembroke held on to defeat Young Harris College 1-0 in a men’s soccer match at the Frances Wood Wilson Soccer Field Sunday (Sept. 18) afternoon.
The Braves, who are ranked No. 7 in the NSCAA NCAA Division II Southeast Region poll, improved to 6-1-0 while the Mountain Lions, who are ranked No. 8 in the region, absorbed their first loss of the season and fell to 5-1-0. Young Harris returns to the pitch Wednesday (Sept. 21) for a 5 p.m. match against No. 7-ranked Clayton State University at Wilson Field.
After a foul, Sam Miles’ initial shot hit the crossbar and the ball took a fortuitous bounce right to UNCP’s Michael Davis, who knocked the ball past Mountain Lion goalkeeper Wezly Barnard, to give the Braves a 1-0 lead at the 33:25 mark.
Young Harris outshot the Braves 14-9, including an 8-3 advantage in the second half, but couldn’t put a ball past UNCP goalkeeper Ryan Hanson, who recorded seven saves in the shutout win.
