YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Young Harris College scored two goals in the final six minutes as the Mountain Lions took a 2-0 victory over Southern Wesleyan University Saturday (Sept. 17) afternoon at the Frances Wood Wilson Soccer Field.
The Mountain Lions have won four matches in a row – including three by shutout – to improve to 4-1-0. The Warriors slipped to 2-3-1. Young Harris hosts the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, which is ranked No. 15 in the NSCAA NCAA Division II Top 25 poll, at 1 p.m. Sunday (Sept. 18).
The Mountain Lions outshot the Warriors 30-7 but they weren’t able to score until the final minutes as Southern Wesleyan goalkeeper Krista Anonie registered 17 saves.
Young Harris finally broke through in the 85th minute as Whitney Thomas scored her second goal of the season off an assist from Lauren Martin. The Mountain Lions added an insurance goal four minutes later as Haley Holderfield notched her third goal off a Thomas pass.
Mountain Lion goalkeeper Kelsey Cunningham tallied her third shutout of the campaign as she turned away three shots.
