Railsplitters rally 2-1 in OT, spoils home opener

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Lindsey Anderson scored twice as the Lincoln Memorial University women’s soccer team rallied for a 2-1 overtime decision over Young Harris College Thursday (Sept. 1) afternoon at Frances Wood Wilson Soccer Field.

It was the season opener for both teams. The Mountain Lions return to action next Thursday (Sept. 8) at 5 p.m. when they host Clayton State University at Wilson Field.

Young Harris took a 1-0 lead on Mika Lopes’ goal in the 23rd minute after Lauren Martin served the ball into the box. Anderson tied the match at 1 and forced the extra time in the 87th minute after she converted a Leanne Reid assist.

Anderson knocked in the golden goal in the 96th minute when she converted the rebound of teammate Sarah Taylor’s initial shot that Mountain Lion goalkeeper Kelsey Cunningham couldn’t collect.

The Mountain Lions outshot the Railsplitters 17-12. LMU goalkeeper Kayla Henson, who was a late addition to the starting lineup, collected 12 saves while Cunningham had seven.
