AIKEN, S.C. – The Young Harris College baseball team fell behind early and couldn’t rally as the Mountain Lions fell to Peach Belt Conference member USC-Aiken, 14-4, on Tuesday night at Roberto Hernandez Stadium.
The Pacers (20-15), who pounded out 18 hits, opened the scoring in the first inning by plating a pair of runs on four hits to grab a 2-0 lead.
Back came Young Harris (18-19) in the top of the second inning as Evan Carr, who went 2-for-3, doubled to left and advanced to third when Jack Morrow and Zeke Gribble reached on back-to-back walks. Bowen Klosinski brought Carr in on a fielder’s choice to cut the deficit to 2-1.
But USC-Aiken answered with two runs on three hits to take a 4-1 lead in the bottom half of the inning.
The Mountain Lions responded with a pair of runs in the third as Zach Bricknell, who went 2-for-5, made it a 4-2 game with a leadoff home run to right center. Tommy Ferguson reached on an error and stole second. After a walk to David Atwood, Josh Rudnik grounded into a double play as Ferguson took third. Back-to-back walks issued to Carr and Morrow loaded the bases. After a pitching change, Gribble walked to plate Ferguson to trim the gap to 4-3.
However, the Pacers got a run back in the bottom of the frame, added a run in the fourth and three in the sixth for a 9-3 advantage.
USC-Aiken put the game away with two runs in the seventh and three runs in the eighth to extend the margin to 14-3.
The Mountain Lions added a run in the ninth as Rudnik and Carr drew walks and Jack Morrow, who went 2-for-3, doubled to right center to plate Rudnik.
