Moore, Medori power YHC to home-opening victory

YOUNG HARRIS – Adam Moore pitched 6.2 strong innings and Mike Medori had three of the six Young Harris College hits as the Mountain Lions earned a 4-1 victory in their home opener Friday against Saint Augustine’s College at Zell B. Miller Field.

"The guys played well today," Young Harris head coach Rick Robinson said. "Adam Moore set the tone for seven innings and Mike Medori provided enough offense for us to win."

Moore (1-2) kept the Falcons guessing the entire day by scattering five hits and giving up a run with three strikeouts and a walk.

Young Harris (3-7) used a three-run third inning to break a scoreless tie.

Ryan LaRose, who went 1-for-3, began the frame with a double to left and scored when Medori followed with a double to left, giving Young Harris a 1-0 lead. Tommy Ferguson, who was 1-for-4, singled through the left side as Medori stopped at third. Zach Bricknell followed with a sacrifice bunt as he was out at first, but Ferguson took second and Medori scored. Ferguson advanced to third on a groundout by David Atwood and scored when Josh Rudnik reached on an error.

The Mountain Lions added a run in the sixth as Moore singled to left to open the inning and took second on a sacrifice bunt by LaRose. Medori, who went 3-for-4, followed with a base hit through the left side as Moore took third. Ferguson reached on a fielder’s choice, allowing Moore to score the fourth Mountain Lion run.

The Falcons (6-5) got a run in the seventh, but good relief pitching by Billy Demersky and Oliver Pratt help prevent any rally.

Demersky worked 1.1 innings, giving up a hit, walking one and fanning one. Pratt earned his first save by pitching a perfect ninth, including striking out a pair.

Chris Vette took the loss for the Falcons. He gave up four runs (three earned) on six hits with five strikeouts and four walks in eight innings.

The Mountain Lions play a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 19 at Zell B. Miller Field against Saint Augustine’s College. First pitch for the opening game is set for noon. Visit http://yhcathletics.athleticsite.net/livestats/bb/xlive.htm for live stats of Saturday’s doubleheader.
