YOUNG HARRIS – Rachel Wilkes scored in the first half and Emily Villas added a goal in the second half as the Young Harris women’s soccer team blanked Truett-McConnell, 2-0, Saturday at the YHC Soccer Field.
The Mountain Lions (2-2) nearly made it 1-0 in the 20th minute as Mica Lopes’ shot to the far post was knocked away by Bears goalkeeper Hayle Swinson. However, Young Harris broke the scoreless tie in the 36th minute as Wilkes was in the right place, at the right time, knocking in a shot, which was initially deflected by Swinson, to give the Mountain Lions a 1-0 lead.
Young Harris remained ahead, 1-0, until the 51st minute as Kelley Lyness’ corner kick found the foot of Villas in the penalty area for the goal to give the Mountain Lions a 2-0 advantage.
The Mountain Lions had a chance to add another goal in the 77th minute, but Villas’ penalty kick shot to the upper left corner was pushed away by Swinson.
Young Harris out-shot Truett-McConnell, 19-7, but the Bears had the advantage on corner kicks, 4-2.
Allie Matulia had four saves for Young Harris, while Swinson finished with 10.
The Mountain Lions remain at home, playing host 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 14 against Tennessee Wesleyan at the YHC Soccer Field.
