YOUNG HARRIS – Trevor Monroe scored a pair of goals and Niall McCabe put the game away late with a goal to lead the Young Harris College men’s soccer team to its second straight win, a 3-1 victory, Saturday against Erskine College at the YHC Soccer Field.
The Mountain Lions (2-4-4) opened the scoring in the 15th minute as Monroe collected a loose ball in the offensive third and went 1-on-1 with Erskine goalkeeper Roberto de la Vina. Monroe’s shot went underneath the diving de la Vina for the goal to give Young Harris an early 1-0 lead.
The score remained 1-0 until the 58th minute when Monroe again found the back of the net.
Thomas Crosby collected the ball on the left side and his pass into the penalty area found Monroe waiting for the strike as the ball hit the bottom of the crossbar before going in to give the Mountain Lions a 2-0 advantage.
In the 62nd minute, Erskine’s Jonathan Rutter picked up his second yellow card of the match and was sent out, giving Young Harris the man advantage.
But it was the Flying Fleet that took control of the momentum in the game by getting a goal in the 63rd minute by Brady Johnson as Matt Sluga picked up the assist.
Erskine had a chance to tie the game in the 68th minute when Lucian Johnson was whistled for a foul in the penalty arena. Jack Kimber took the penalty kick, but his shot sailed over the crossbar, keeping the Mountain Lions on top, 2-1.
McCabe sealed the victory for Young Harris in the 82nd minute as he rocketed a half-volley shot into the back of the net, giving the Mountain Lions a 3-1 advantage.
Wezley Barnard recorded seven saves for Young Harris, while de la Vina had three for Erskine (6-5).
Young Harris held a slim 15-13 margin in shots and for the first time all season, the Mountain Lions failed to have a corner kick as Erskine dominated that category, 11-0. The game also featured 28 total fouls and nine total yellow cards.
