YOUNG HARRIS – Alex Fleming scored on a penalty kick late in the first half to lift the Thomas University men’s soccer team to a 1-0 win over Young Harris Friday evening at the YHC Soccer Field.
After a scoreless 30 minutes of action, a Night Hawks player was taken down inside the penalty area and Fleming converted the penalty kick, which proved to be the game winner.
Young Harris (2-5-4) out-shot Thomas (7-3-3), 20-17, including 16-9 in the second half. The Mountain Lions, who had a chance to tie the game with a free kick with one second remaining in the second half as Andreas Pechmann’s shot sailed over the crossbar, also had an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Wezley Barnard finished with 11 saves, while Andy Hoffer recorded six.
Young Harris returns to action 3:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 16 at the YHC Soccer Field against Lambuth University.
