Pechmann powers YHC to first win

YOUNG HARRIS – It was a great day for the Young Harris College men’s soccer team and Andreas Pechmann as the Mountain Lions roared to their first victory of the season, a 4-2 win over Shorter University, Wednesday at the YHC Soccer Field.

Pechmann had a pair of goals and an assist to pace Young Harris (1-4-4), which fell behind in the opening minutes of the game and battled back for the win.

Shorter (6-4-1) opened the scoring in the second minute as Adrian Burns scored when the ball rebounded to him at the top of the penalty arena and his strike beat Mountain Lions goalkeeper Wezley Barnard for the goal.

Young Harris responded with the equalizer in the 25th minute as Luis Salaises’ ball was flicked off the head of Mouhamed Bechir to Lucian Johnson, who beat Hawks goalkeeper Marcus Stallechner with a powerful strike to the near side of the goal, tying the contest at 1.

Pechmann put the Mountain Lions ahead, 2-1, with a free-kick goal from about 35 yards out in the 37th minute.

The score remained 2-1 until the 58th minute when Felix Jaekel tied the game at 2 when he scored off a free kick.

However, Young Harris broke the 2-2 tie in the 74th minute for good as Pechmann played a ball down the right flank to a streak Sam Walker. His cross found Trevor Monroe all alone on the back post for the goal, giving the Mountain Lions a 3-2 advantage.

After a foul just outside the penalty area in the 81st minute, Pechmann notched his second goal of the game on a free kick to give Young Harris a 4-2 lead.

Barnard recorded four saves, while Stallechner had three.

Shorter out-shot Young Harris, 21-15, and held a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.

The Mountain Lions return to action 2:00 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 9 at the YHC Soccer Field against Erskine College.
