YOUNG HARRIS – Linda Lehmann recorded a hat trick as the Young Harris College women’s soccer team dominated Oakwood University, 7-0, on Sunday afternoon at the YHC Soccer Field.
The Mountain Lions (9-5-1), who recorded their seventh shutout of the season, wasted little time getting onto the scoreboard as Kelsey Battle scored an unassisted goal in the fourth minute to give Young Harris a 1-0 lead.
The advantage grew to 2-0 as Battle and Kaylin Canup assisted on Meaghan Hames’ goal in the 9th minute. The Mountain Lions extended the margin to 3-0 in the 11th minute as Whitney Thomas’ through ball found Lehmann for her first goal of the contest.
Lehmann knocked in her second goal in the 13th minute on an assist from Battle to give Young Harris a 4-0 lead and Hayden Verner knocked in a penalty kick in the 20th minute to give the Mountain Lions a 5-0 lead.
Young Harris, which hasn’t surrendered a goal in 180 minutes of action, added to the lead in the 56th minute as Chelsea Coleman’s cross found Lehmann for her third goal of the game. Rachel Wilkes assisted on a Lauren Martin header in the 79th minute to push the advantage to 7-0.
Gabby Smith registered one save in the win, while Ashante Lucombe had nine for Oakwood.
The Mountain Lions out-shot Oakwood, 38-1, and had a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Young Harris has its final home game 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 3 at the YHC Soccer Field against Shorter University.
