Mountain Lions rally to tie Lady Hawks

YOUNG HARRIS - It appeared for nearly 70 minutes that an early goal would doom the Young Harris College women's soccer team, but that wasn't the case in the home finale as the Mountain Lions rallied to tie Shorter University Wednesday afternoon, 1-1, at the YHC Soccer Field.

Brandi Greenwald's goal off a header by Rachel Wood just eight seconds into the contest gave Shorter (10-7-1) a 1-0 lead.

The Lady Hawks took that lead into the second half, but faced a pesky Young Harris squad determined to tie the game.

In the 70th minute, Mika Lopes played a beautiful through ball into the penalty area to Haley Holderfield. Holderfield's initial shot was stopped by Shorter goalkeeper Taylor Hays, but the ball bounced right back to Holderfield and her second shot found the back of the net for the equalizer.

The score remained tied at 1 heading into overtime and the Mountain Lions (9-5-2) nearly won the game five minutes into the extra frame as Emily Villas' shot sailed just left of the post, keeping the contest tied, 1-1.

Gabby Smith finished with five saves in goal for Young Harris, while Hays recorded eight.

The Lady Hawks out-shot the Mountain Lions, 18-16, but Young Harris had the edge in corner kicks, 5-3.

The Mountain Lions conclude the season 1:00 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 7 in Huntsville, Ala., against Oakwood University.
