YOUNG HARRIS – Rachel Wilkes scored the game-winning goal in the 77th minute to break a tie, giving the Young Harris College women’s soccer team a 2-1 victory over Lambuth University Saturday at the YHC Soccer Field.
The Mountain Lions (7-4-1) wasted little time in breaking a 0-0 tie by getting a goal – an own goal – in the second minute of the game.
The Eagles (3-8) battled back and tied the game in the 73rd minute when Pam Grega’s pass went through the legs of Young Harris goalkeeper Allie Matulia and to the back post where Malissa Gallogly knocked in the equalizer, tying the game at 1.
Wilkes broke the tie in the 77th minute when Kelsey Battle’s long pass to the right side found a streaking Wilkes. Her shot to the far post beat Lambuth goalkeeper Rachel Harlass for the goal.
The Mountain Lions out-shot the Lady Eagles, 16-5, including 8-1 in the first half. Young Harris also had a 7-0 decisive advantage in corner kicks.
Matulia recorded three saves, while Harlass had six.
The Mountain Lions return to action 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 26 at Peach Belt Conference opponent Clayton State University.
