YOUNG HARRIS – The Young Harris College women’s soccer team held off a furious late rally by Thomas University in claiming a 2-1 victory Friday at the YHC Soccer Field.
The Mountain Lions (6-4-1) opened the scoring in the 34th minute as Lauren Martin collected a great through ball by Kelley Lyness and knocked it into the back of the net to give Young Harris a 1-0 advantage.
The score remained 1-0 until the 52nd minute when Mika Lopes headed home a corner kick from Lyness to give the Mountain Lions a 2-0 lead.
The Lady Night Hawks (6-8) responded in the 63rd minute on a free-kick goal by Hannah Claesson to trim the margin to 2-1. 
Thomas had a furious rally in the final five minutes, but the Young Harris defense responded to the challenge and kept the tying goal out of the back of the net for the win.
The Lady Night Hawks out-shot the Mountain Lions, 16-12, and also had a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
Young Harris returns to action 1:00 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 16 at the YHC Soccer Field against Lambuth University.
