HARROGATE, Tenn. | The Young Harris College men's and women's tennis teams kicked off their fall slate at the Lincoln Memorial Invitational this past weekend (Sept. 17-19).
The LMU Invitational hosted both YHC and Tusculum University along with host Lincoln Memorial University. The tournament consisted of three flights of singles and doubles. The men's team collected nine wins in singles and doubles play, while the women's team assembled 10.
MEN:
- Romeo Luque went 2-1 in singles play defeating Thom Hermans (LMU) 6-0, 6-3, and Franco Battaglino (LMU) 6-1, and 6-5.
- Pieke Bouman went 3-0 in singles play and put together two wins in doubles play partnering up with Janis Auslands. Bouman beat Nathan Matsuguma (TU) 6-0, 6-4, Sebastian Colla (LMU) 6-4, 6-2, and Mateo Rivera (LMU) 6-1, 6-1. In doubles play Bouman and Auslands defeated Sebastian Colla/ Fabian Sjokvist (LMU) 7-5, and Jacco Mesigna/ Nathan Matsuguma (TU) 6-4.
WOMEN:
- Jing Dong went 2-1 in singles play and picked up one win in doubles play partnering with Louise Ratiu. Dong gained victories against Hansen (TU) 6-2, 6-2, and Ascarrunz (LMU) 6-3, 6-1. Dong and Ratiu together defeated Hansen/Floeth (TU) 7-6 (5).
- Joselyne Chapui went 2-1 in singles play and picked up two wins in doubles play partnering with Meghna Mallath. Chapui defeated Dalhstrom (LMU) 1-6, 6-1, 10-5, and Palacio (TU) 6-4, 6-1. Together Chapui and Mallath triumphed over Aray/Rodriguez (LMU) 6-3, and Daugherty/Palacio (TU) 6-1.
Both teams will compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II Southeast Regional Championships Friday through Monday (Sept. 24-27) at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, South Carolina.
Luque, Chimo Minguez Ribera, Alex Schiltz, and Rodrigo Mendoza qualified for the singles draw for the men, while Ratiu, Dong, and Bailee Wilson qualified in the women's draw. Zoe Freke is an alternate in singles for the Mountain Lions. Luque and Minguez Ribera qualified for the men's doubles draw with Schiltz and Mendoza being alternates. Ratiu, Dong, Wilson and Freke qualified for the women's doubles tournament.
