Shorter sweeps doubleheader from No. 5 Mountain Lions

ROME, Ga. | Shorter University limited the No. 5 Young Harris College softball team to five hits as the Hawks swept a doubleheader Wednesday (Feb. 24) afternoon.

The Hawks won 6-4 in the opener and rallied for a 5-4 victory in eight innings in the nightcap as they improved to 4-5. The Mountain Lions fell to 8-3.

Game 1
  • Young Harris didn't get its first hit in the opener as Emily Harris reached on a infield hit in the sixth inning. The Mountain Lions scored three runs in the sixth to cut the deficit in half to 6-3. YHC, which drew 12 walks from the Hawks, Haylie Shope and Maddie Urquiola had bases-loaded walks to drive in two runs, while Shea Bayreuther drove in the other run on a fielder's choice.
  • The Mountain Lions scored their other run as Bayreuther drew a bases-loaded walk.
  • Karah Straub accounted for the other YHC as she led off the seventh with a bunt single.
  • Ireland Cavanaugh (1-1) took the loss as she allowed three first-inning runs.

Game 2
  • Young Harris only had three hits - all by Carly Rigsbee - in the nightcap.
  • The Mountain Lions took a 1-0 lead in the first as Rigsbee had an RBI single to right field .
  • Rigsbee made it 2-0 in the third has she stroked a run-scoring single to center.
  • Young Harris got a sacrifice fly from Shope and on another Rigsbee RBI single, this time to left field, as the Mountain Lions expanded their lead to 4-0 in the top of the seventh.
  • Shorter forced extra innings when they rallied for four runs (two unearned) in the bottom half of the inning
  • The Hawks claimed the win in the eighth on Carlee Graham single.
  • Sara King took the loss in relief for YHC.
  • Julie Sanderlin picked up the complete-game victory despite walking four and hitting seven batters.
