AUM outlasts No. 1 YHC 5-4 in PKs to advance in NCAA tournament

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Auburn University at Montgomery and No. 1-ranked Young Harris College battled to a 0-0 draw in double overtime, but the Warhawks advanced 5-4 in sudden death penalty kicks Thursday (Dec. 2) evening in the third round of the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Tournament at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.

The No. 5-seeded Warhawks improved to 11-4-4 and they will advance to Saturday's (Dec. 4) Super Region 2 championship match at 3 p.m. against No. 7 seed Nova Southeastern University, who defeated No. 6 seed Chowan University 1-0 in the other third round match. The Mountain Lions, who was making their sixth trip in the past eight seasons to the NCAA tournament, ended their campaign at 18-0-2.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
  • Young Harris outshot Auburn Montgomery 12-7, including a 5-2 edge on goal.
  • The Mountain Lions had the best two chances to score in the match. Saad Maziane's shot midway through the first half clanked off the right post and Sondre Olsen's attempt midway through the second half hit the left post.
  • YHC held a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks.
  • In the penalty shootout, Olsen and Val Feeney converted the first two penalty kicks for the Mountain Lions. AUM took a 3-2 lead after the third round as Alexander Kraus stopped Yesin van der Pluijm's attempt. Edoardo Righetti and Mikkel Goling converted the next two penalty kicks for the Mountain Lions. YHC sent the penalty kicks into sudden death at 4 when YHC goalkeeper Eduardo D'Avino pushed Phillip Spickenbaum's attempt over the crossbar. Adam Kirkwood's attempt was stopped by Kraus before Guilherme Bittencourt put his penalty kick in the left corner of the net to clinch it for AUM.
  • D'Avino earned the shutout in goal for the Mountain Lions as he turned away two shots.
