No. 3 Mountain Lions post 5-1 Senior Day win over Clayton State

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | The third-ranked Young Harris College men's soccer team scored two goals within a 17-second span early against Clayton State University as the Mountain Lions defeated the Lakers 5-1 in a Peach Belt Conference match Saturday (Oct. 30) afternoon at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.

The Mountain Lions improved to 15-0-1 overall and to 11-0-1 in the Peach Belt. YHC earned the No. 1 seed in the upcoming PBC Tournament and claimed a bye in the first round. Young Harris will next play in a semifinal match of the tournament Nov. 12 in Evans, Georgia. The PBC will announce the tournament pairings Monday (Nov. 1). The Lakers fell to 8-7-2 and 7-4-1.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
  • Saad Maziane and Sondre Olsen scored 17 seconds apart in the fifth minute as Young Harris opened up a 2-0 lead.
  • Maziane scored his team-leading 11th goal off a pass from Val Feeney to open the scoring a 4:21.
  • Olsen scored his sixth goal of the campaign at 4:38 off a Quinn Thompson assist.
  • Thompson fed the ball to Mikkel Goling at the top of the box as YHC took a 3-0 lead at the 34:39 mark.
  • Clayton State got a goal back in the 52nd minute on a Langston Blackstock penalty kick.
  • Goling, who now has nine goals in 2021, and Joel Whittingham, who has three on the season, scored the final two goals for the Mountain Lions.
  • Federico Gutierrez, Adam Kirkwood and Yesin van der Pluijm also registered assists for YHC.
  • Young Harris held a 21-10 margin on shots, including an 11-6 edge on goal.
  • Clayton State took a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.
  • Eduardo D'Avino corraled five saves in net for the Mountain Lions.
  • Prior to the match, the Mountain Lions honored their 12 seniors. In addition to Olsen, Feeney, Gutierrez, Kirkwood, van der Pluijm and D'Avino, the other seniors for YHC included Alex Sanchez, Niklas Schell, Ala Ramadan, Amir Rabiei, Mauricio Kosegarten and Brandon Griffin.
