COLUMBUS, Ga. | The fifth-ranked Young Harris College softball team swept their final two games at the CSU Classic hosted by Columbus State University Sunday (Feb. 9) afternoon.
The Mountain Lions (5-0) took the opener 4-2 over Bellarmine University before closing out with a 13-2 decision in five innings over Shorter University.
Young Harris returns to action Friday (Feb. 14) with 10 a.m. contest against Carson-Newman University in the Bearcat/Fleet Invitational in Due West, South Carolina. The Mountain Lions will also face Belmont Abbey College at 1 p.m. in Greenwood, South Carolina.
Against Bellarmine, YHC took a 1-0 lead in the first on a
Carly Rigsbee single to left which scored
Emily Harris, who led off with a double down the left field line. The Knights tied the game at 1 on a Hannah Webb homer before the Mountain Lions retook the lead at 3-1 on Rigsbee two-run double down the left field line that score
Karah Straub and Harris, who each reached on a single. Young Harris got its final run on a leadoff homer to left-center off
Michalyn Bingham's bat in the fourth.
Harris, Rigsbee and Bingham each collected two hits for YHC.Â
Sam Davis (3-0) earned the win as she allowed just three hits and struck out four in the complete-game effort.
Against Shorter, the Mountain Lions banged out 14 hits in the win.
Jill Torres drove in five, while
Morgan Curley had three RBI.Â
Haylie Shope had an RBI single and
Katelynn Hodges walked with the bases loaded to give the Mountain Lions a 2-0 lead in the first. Torres added an RBI walk in the second before Young Harris scored five runs in each of the third and fourth innings to take a 13-0 lead. Curley had RBI hit in the third before Torres drove in two with a double to right-center. Curley and Torres each drove two runs in the fourth. Curley had a double double the right field line while Torres singled to right-center.
Shope led the way with three hits, while Harris, Curley, Rigsbee, Torres and Straub had two hits each.
Maddie Green (1-0) earned the win in the circle for YHC.
