YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | The top-ranked Young Harris College softball team claimed two wins Saturday (Feb. 22) afternoon at the YHC Tournamenr at the YHC Softball Field.
The Mountain Lions used a five-run fourth inning to down No. .19 Trevecca Nazarene University 8-3 in the opener before
Carly Rigsbee's single in the bottom of the seventh in the nightcap gave YHC a 2-1 win.
The Mountain Lions improved to 11-0. Young Harris will face Catawba again at 9 a.m. Sunday (Feb. 23) before facing No. 8 Lincoln Memorial University at 2 p.m.
Trevecca Nazarene took a 2-1 on lead on a Matti Byrd home run to left field in the fourth inning before the Mountain Lions responded with five runs in their half of the inning.
Maddie Urquiola stroked a two-run homer - her third of the year - to center to give YHC a 3-2 lead. The Mountain Lions used another long ball - a three-run shot to left field by
Carly Rigsbee to give YHC a 6-2 lead.
The Mountain Lions added two insurance runs in the sixth to take an 8-3 lead. Rigsbee drove in a run on a fielder's choice while
Haylie Shope was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Emily Harris led Young Harris with three hits, including a double.
Maddie Green (3-0) earned the win in relief, allowing just two hits and a run in 3 1/3 innings.
Against Catawba, YHC tied the game at 1 in the bottom of the fourth on
Michalyn Bingham's RBI double down the left field line.
It stayed that way until the bottom of the seventh as
Morgan Curley started the two-out rally with a walk and Harris reached on a bunt single. After both runners moved up 60 feet on a wild pitch, Rigsbee hit a bloop single to right to win the game for the Mountain Lions.
Shope (2-0) earned the win in relief as she wigglled out of trouble in the top of the seventh. With the potential runner on third base, Shopr got the final two batters to strike out.
