DAHLONEGA, Ga. | Sarah Beth King connected on a two-run homer to give Georgia Southwestern State University a 2-0 semifinal victory over Young Harris College at the Peach Belt Conference Softball Tournament Saturday (May 4) afternoon on the University of North Georgia campus.
The No. 7-seeded Hurricanes improved to 29-25 and will face top seed North Georgia in the title game later in the day, while the Mountain Lions, who were the No. 3 seed, fell to 37-17. Young Harris saw their season-high 12-game winning streak snapped. The Hurricanes had been the last team to had beat the Mountain Lions prior to the winning streak.
Young Harris will find out Monday (May 6) at 10 a.m. if they will earn an at-large berth to the NCAA Division II Tournament.
The game was a pitcher's duel between GSW's Shannon Gibson (12-8) and YHC's
Nikkie Kovalsky (23-10) through four scoreless innings before lightning and heavy rains delayed the game in the top of the fifth for just over three hours. It was the third weather delay of the tournament for the Mountain Lions.
Lauren Kuerzi started the decisive rally in the sixth with a one-out single back up the middle before King hit an 0-1 pitch over the left field wall to give the Hurricanes a 2-0 lead.Â
Young Harris had the tying runs at the plate in both the sixth and seventh innings, but Gibson, who coaxed 18 ground outs and just one fly out, was able to get out of trouble both times. Gibson only allowed one runner to get past second base the entire game.
The Mountain Lions collected three hits against Gibson.
Jill Torres had two of the hits, while
Grace Botti accounted for the other one.
