oMILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. | Young Harris College fell to Carson-Newman 1-0 in the opener and 3-2 in game two of a non-conference softball doubleheader in the Bobcat Kickoff at the Peeler Complex.
The Eagles start the season 2-0, while the 13th-ranked Mountain Lions fell to 0-2. Young Harris returns to action Saturday (Feb. 2) at the Bobcat Kickoff with a 3 p.m. doubleheader against Albany State University.
Nikkie Kovalsky (0-2) threw a complete game for the Mountain Lions with 10 strikeouts, but gave up the difference in the fourth inning with a home run by Haley Caldwell.
Allison Rager (2-0) earned the victory for Carson-Newman as she allowed only two hits with three strikeouts in seven innings pitched.
Young Harris struck first in game two with a bases loaded walk from
Katelynn Hodges in the second inning.
Dara Moore made it a 2-0 lead for the Mountain Lions with a single to left center to score
Morgan Curley.
Rager put the Eagles on the board in the bottom half of the fourth with a solo homer to left field. Janelle Benzick tied the game after she reached on a fielder's choice to score Caldwell.
Carson-Newman took a 3-2 lead after a sacrifice fly to center by Rager.
Kovalsky took the loss for Young Harris as she allowed one run on one hit with five strikeouts in three innings of relief.
Moore and
Haylie Shope collected two hits apiece.
Kristan Lizardi added a triple in the sixth inning.
Rager earned her second victory of the day for the Eagles as she gave up two runs on six hits with three strikeouts over 5.1 innings pitched.
