EVANS, Ga. | Francis Marion University upset ninth-ranked Young Harris College 2-1 in the semfinals of the 2019 Peach Belt Conference Men's Soccer Tournament Friday (Nov. 15) evening on a muddy pitch at Blanchard Woods Park.
The fourth-seeded Patriots improve to 14-4-1 and will face Lander University in the 3 p.m. championship match Sunday (Nov. 17) afternoon. The top-seeded Mountain Lions fell to 12-4-0 and will now wait to see if they will earn one of the five at-large berths from Super Region 2 for the NCAA Division II Tournament. The announcement of the 40-team tournament will be announced Monday (Nov. 18) evening.
Javier Bello scored his eighth goal of the season at the 28:35 mark as he converted a cross from teammate Travis Cooke near the right post to give FMU a 1-0 lead.
Hayden Tucker knocked in a ball that bounced around in the box two minutes before the half to tie the score at 1 for the Mountain Lions. It was his second goal of 2019.
Francis Marion retook the lead at 2-1 at the 61:47 mark as Jafet Santiago sent the ball into the box to Magnus Hoejland for his first score of the year.
Dani Fischer had a chance to tie the game for the Mountain Lions with less than five minutes remaining, but Patriot goalkeeper Maximillano Rocco turned away his penalty kick opportunity.
