Young Harris wraps up successful season at Super Regional

DAHLONEGA, Ga.  |  The Young Harris College softball team wrapped up their 2018 season at the NCAA Division II Southeast Super Regional as they fell to No. 1 University of North Georgia 2-0 Friday (May 18) afternoon at Haines and Carolyn Hill Stadium.

The Mountain Lions, who were the No. 7 seed in the region, ended their season with a 35-21 record. In her third season at YHC, head coach Kayla Lucas led Young Harris, which was making its first-ever appearance in the super regionals, to its third consecutive NCAA tournament appearances. The Nighthawks, who were the No. 1 seed in the region, improved to 61-2 and advances to the NCAA Division II Softball Championship next week in Salem, Virginia.

YHC struck first in the bottom of the fourth inning. Georgia Webb started the inning with an infield single and was sacrificed to second on Grace Botti's bunt.  Webb moved over to third on Murphy Davis's bunt single. Kristin Lizardi followed with a single to center field by Kristan Lizardi that scored Webb.

The Nighthawks tied the game at 1 in the sixth inning with a solo homer to left by Kaylyn Anthony.

Hobby Gregory, who started the North Georgia seventh inning with a bunt single, moved to second on a groundout before going to third on a wild pitch. After Marley Stowers was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners, North Georgia tried a double steal. The Mountain Lions cut off the throw to second and looked to have Gregory out at home, but Young Harris was called for obstruction which allowed UNG to take a 2-1 lead.

The Mountain Lions tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh. Lizardi laced a single down the left field line before pinch hitter Sara Alderman sacrificed her over to second. After a deep fly to left allowed Lizardi to move to third base, North Georgia got Hannah Harrison to ground out to end the game.

Kylee Smith (35-1) picked up the win for the Nighthawks as she allowed one run on five hits with three walks and eight strikeouts in seven innings pitched.

Louise Disi (5-7) earned the loss for the Mountain Lions as she allowed two runs on five hits with three walks and six strikeouts in seven innings pitched.

Lizardi went 2-for-3 at the plate with one RBI while Webb, Harrison, and Davis each tallied one hit.
