ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. | Mikie Rowe's second hat trick of the season helped the No. 2 Young Harris College men's soccer team to a 4-0 Peach Belt Conference victory over Flagler College Saturday (Oct. 20) afternoon at Saints Field.
The Mountain Lions improved to 13-0-0 overall and to 5-0-0 in the Peach Belt, while the Saints fell to 4-8-1 and 2-2-1. Young Harris returns to action Wednesday (Oct. 24) when they travel to Dahlonega, Georgia, for a 7 p.m. PBC match against its Battle of Blood Mountain foe University of North Georgia.
Rowe, who 19 goals this season moved the senior from Wexford, Ireland into a tie for second place with Ilija Ilic (2013) for most goals in a season, gave the Mountain Lions a 2-0 lead with back-to-back goals 16 seconds apart. After Rowe was taken down in the box, he converted a penalty kick into the left corner of the net at the 34:12 mark.
Kevin Coiffic sent in a deep ball nearly the full field to Rowe 16 seconds and Rowe put the ball into the back of the net to double the Mountain Lions lead.
Carlos Gomez scored just five minutes into the second half to give the Mountain Lions a 3-0 advantage.
Dani Fischer sent in one of YHC's 11 corner kicks from the right side to Yesin van der Plujim at the back post, Van der Plujim headed the ball to Gomez, who tapped it in for his ninth goal of 2018. Rowe closed out the scoring at the 54:40 mark when he knocked in the rebound of Gomez' initial shot that the Flagler goalkeeper couldn't corral.
YHC held a 19-6 advantage in shots, including as 12-2 ledger on goal. The Mountain Lions dominated in corner kicks 11-1.Â
In his first start in goal,
Christian Kjellsby picked up his first clean sheet of his career as he stopped two shots for the Mountain Lions, while Mel Broughton had eight saves for the Saints.Â
