EVANS, Ga. | The University of North Georgia scored three first half goals as the Nighthawks upset Young Harris College 3-0 in the semifinals of the 2017 Peach Belt Conference Men's Soccer Tournament Friday (Nov. 3) evening at Blanchard Woods Park.
The Nighthawks, who are seeded third in the tournament, improved to 10-7-0 and will advance to Sunday's (Nov. 5) 3:30 p.m. championship match against top seed Lander University, which defeated Clayton State University 5-1 in the other semifinal. The 12th-ranked Mountain Lions, who are seeded No. 2 in the tournament, fell to 11-3-2 and will have to wait until Monday (Nov. 6) at 6:30 p.m. to find out if they will receive an at-large berth to the NCAA Division II National Championship.
North Georgia took a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute as Michael Akin played a through ball to Alex Grant, who scored his 10th goal of the season. The Nighthawks took control of the match with two late first half goals by Adam Farrell and Jordan Day in a 93-second span to open a 3-0 lead.Â
Young Harris held a 12-6 advantage on shots and a 4-2 margin on corner kicks. Matt Sharman stopped four shots for the Nighthawks in goal as he recoeded the shutout, while
Alex Iglesias had one save for the Mountain Lions.
