YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Young Harris College swept a Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke by scores of 6-3 and 3-2 on a cool, breezy Sunday (March 20) afternoon at E.D. Rivers Field.
The Mountain Lions improved to 21-9 overall and to 7-3 in the Peach Belt while the Braves fell to 14-15-1 and 5-5. Young Harris returns to action Friday (March 25) when they travel to Americus, Georgia, for a 1 p.m. PBC doubleheader against Georgia Southwestern State University.
UNC Pembroke took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one before the Mountain Lions tied the game at 1 in the bottom half as
Chandler Stooksbury drove in a run with single through the left side.
The Braves retook the lead at 2-1 in the third before Young Harris pushed across three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Stooksbury and
Sarah Beth Marquis each drove in runs on bases-loaded walks off UNCP starter Katie Saunders (9-8). The Mountain Lions added the other run on a passed ball.
YHC added single runs in the fourth and sixth innings to take a 6-3 lead.
Hannah Harrison led off the fourth with a home run – her third of 2016 - to center field while Stooksbury added another bases-loaded walk in the sixth inning.
Darby Stanford earned the complete-game win to raise her record to 16-1.
Jeanie Perrucci led the Mountain Lions with two hits while Stooksbury drove in three runs.
The Mountain Lions jumped out to a 2-0 lead in game two as they scored a run in both the first and second innings off UNCP starter Abbey Walters (3-4).
Murphy Davis drove in the first run on a single to right field while the other run was a result of a UNCP throwing error.
UNCP tied the game at 2 with two runs in the third before Young Harris reclaimed the lead at 3-2 in the fourth inning as Marquis scored on a wild pitch.
Perrucci (3-6) and
Mary Catherine Smith combined to toss a three-hitter for the Mountain Lions. Perrucci struck out five in five innings while Smith earned her first save with two scoreless innings of relief.
Marquis led the Mountain Lions with two hits in the nightcap.Â
