Young Harris sweeps doubleheader from Royals

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. | The Young Harris College softball swept a softball doubleheader from Queens (N.C.) University Sunday (Jan. 31) afternoon on the final day of the Bobcat Kickoff Classic hosted by Georgia College at the Peeler Complex.

Young Harris recorded its second shutout of the young season with a 3-0 win in the opener while the Mountain Lions overcame an early three-run deficit to win the nightcap 11-7.

The Mountain Lions improved to 4-0 and will return to action Saturday (Feb. 6) when they travel to Gulf Shores, Alabama, to compete in the Gulf Coast Invitational. Young Harris will face the University of West Florida in its opener at 10 a.m. Central time followed by a 12:15 contest against Tuskegee University. The Royals remained winless in four tries.

Young Harris jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the opener off Queens starter Evie Scott (0-1) as Sarah Magill had an RBI double to right-center field and Murphy Davis added a run-scoring single back up the middle. The Mountain Lions added an insurance run in the fourth on Magill's second double of the game, this time to left-center field.

YHC starter Darby Stanford (2-0) threw her second complete game as she only allowed four hits while striking out three. Jeanie Perrucci, Magill and Davis each collected two hits for the Mountain Lions. Hannah Harrison also added a double.

In the nightcap, the Royals took advantage of three YHC errors and a two-run homer by Venus Gonzalez to open a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

Young Harris got a run back in the second on a Kelsey Nix RBI single and then posted a four-run third inning to take a 4-3 lead. Grace Botti drove in two runs on a single to center field while Davis added a sacrifice fly.

Queens tied the game at 5 with two runs in the fourth, but the Mountain Lions posted three runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to open up an 11-5 lead. Lindsay Tudor drove in a run in the sixth while Botti added second two-run single of the game. In the seventh, Harrison drove in two runs with her triple to center and Perrucci added a sacrifice fly.

Perrucci (1-0) pitched the final 3 1/3 innings in relief to earn the win for the Mountain Lions. She allowed two runs on three hits and two strikeouts.

Harrison, Perrucci, Magill and Botti had two hits apiece in the Mountain Lions' 13-hit attack.
