YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Young Harris College swept a non-conference doubleheader from Lee University Tuesday (April 14) evening at E.D. Rivers Field.
The Mountain Lions won both games in six innings, taking game one 10-2 and game two 11-3.
Young Harris won their eighth consecutive game as they improved to 30-12 overall while the Flames fell to 28-17. The Mountain Lions Young Harris will host cross-mountain rival University of North Georgia in a 2 p.m. Peach Belt Conference game Thursday (April 16). UNG is currently ranked No. 8 in the latest NFCA NCAA Division II Top 25 poll.
Young Harris opened up a 7-0 lead after three innings in game one. The Mountain Lions scored four times in the second as Young Harris got one hit – a two-run double to left by Sarah Magill. YHC added other runs as Sydnee Weaver was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Jeanie Perrucci added a sacrifice fly.
Chandler Stooksbury led off the third on a homer to left, her seventh of 2015. Stacia Williams later stroked her fifth homer of the season in the inning as her two-run shot gave YHC a 7-0 lead.
Sarah Beth Marquis and Lindsay Tudor led the offense with two hits each while Magill, who is fourth in NCAA Division II in RBI, drove in three to rise her season total to 59.
Darby Stanford (18-4) scattered 10 hits and struck out six for the Mountain Lions while Angie Hughes (13-6) took the loss for the Flames.
Young Harris broke open a tied game at 3 with a six-run fifth inning on just two hits as the Mountain Lions took advantage of two Lee errors and wildness from the Lee pitching staff. Georgia Webb, who went 3-for-4 with two doubles and 3 RBI, had the big hit with a two-run double to center that gave the Mountain Lions the lead for good at 5-3.
Perrucci also collected two hits in the nightcap for the Mountain Lions.
Rachel Benson (2-0) earned the win in relief with two scoreless innings. Brianna Eichbaum (5-2) took the loss for the Flames.
