Mountain Lions start 2015 season with sweep of Tornados

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Young Harris College started the 2015 softball season Saturday (Jan. 31) afternoon at E.D. Rivers Field with a sweep – 8-0 (six innings) and 4-2 - over Brevard College.

The Mountain Lions improved to 2-0 while the Tornados fell to 0-2. Young Harris will travel to Clearwater, Florida, next weekend to compete in the Eckerd College Softball Spring Invitational. The Mountain Lions start the tournament Friday (Feb. 6) at the Eddie C. Moore Complex with a 4:30 p.m. contest against host Eckerd College.

Darby Stanford (1-0) scattered three hits and struck out five in the complete-game victory in the opener.

The Mountain Lions opened the scoring in the third as Sarah Magill, who went 3-for-4 with four RBI, smacked a three-run homer to right after Lyndsey York lead off the inning with a double and Murphy Davis coaxed a walk from Brevard pitcher Jamie Hrobak (0-1).

Young Harris added a run in the fourth on a Magill RBI single before closing the game out with a four-run sixth. York, who went 2-for-3, had a run-scoring triple after Georgia Webb had reached on a double. Davis singled up the middle to score another run and Chandler Stooksbury singled home two runs on a single to right-center field.

The Mountain Lions put together a three-run third inning in the nightcap off Brevard starter Casey Whitaker (0-1). Stooksbury, who went 3-for-4, stroked a two-run single to right and Webb added an RBI groundout.  YHC made it 4-0 with an unearned run in the fifth before Brevard rallied for two runs in the top of the sixth.

Jeanie Perrucci (1-0) struck out four in the complete-game win.
