YHC shuts out Lander 2-0 to pick up back-to-back PBC Tournament titles

EVANS, Ga. | Young Harris College scored a goal in each half as the Mountain Lions claimed their second consecutive Peach Belt Conference Tournament championship with a 2-0 defeat of No. 12-ranked Lander University Sunday (Nov. 8) afternoon at a muddy  Blanchard Woods Park.

The Mountain Lions, who were the tournament's top seed, avenged a 3-1 loss to the Bearcats during the regular season as they won their sixth consecutive match and improved to 16-3-0. The Bearcats, who were seeded third, fell to 14-3-1. Both teams will find out their postseason destinations when the NCAA Division II Tournament field is unveiled Monday (Nov. 9) evening.

Young Harris took a 1-0 lead midway through the first half when All-PBC Tournament performers Paco Craig and Lewis Hilton teammed up. Hilton sent in a direct kick from 40 yards out to Craig near the right post. Craig headed the ball past Lander goalkeeper Barrett Nielsen, who had nine saves, at the 24:34 mark for his seventh goal of 2015.

The Mountain Lions, which outshot Lander 21-5 (11-4 on goal), added an insurance goal with 8:30 remaining in the match as Marco Micaletto knocked in a rebound from 10 yards out of Jake Simpson shot that Nielson couldn't corral. It was Micaletto's fourth goal of the season.

Mikie Rowe was also named to the all-tournament team while Macauley King was named the tournament MVP. King, a defender, was a big reason why Lander was shutout for only the second time this season and held the Bearcats to a season-low five shots (previous low was 12).

Jordan Bradshaw picked up four saves in goal as he notched his sixth clean sheet of 2015.
