JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Maleya Garrison's goal midway through the first half was the difference as Carson-Newman University edged Young Harris College 1-0 in a women's soccer match Wednesday (Sept. 10) evening at McCown Field.
The Eagles improved to 1-2-0 while the Mountain Lions slipped to 1-2-0. Young Harris returns to action Sept. 17 when they travel to Morrow, Georgia, to face Clayton State University in its 2014 Peach Belt Conference opener. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
Mikayla Gregg fed Garrison a through ball from the center midfielder for the match's only goal at the 18:45 mark. It was Garrison's first goal of the season.
Carson-Newman held a slight 10-9 advantage in total shots, but the Mountain Lions held a 6-5 margin in shots on goal. Amber Matthews and Dani Pena each collected two shots, while Olivia Goddard, Carly Rich, Madelyn Youngblood, Julia DaSilva and Kaeli McDermott each tallied a shot.
YHC goalkeeper Arielle Charles registered four saves while Taylor Hammond had six for the Eagles.
