EVANS, Ga. – Kendall Carballo's goal 28 seconds into overtime gave Young Harris College a 1-0 win over the University of South Carolina Aiken in the championship match of the Peach Belt Conference Men's Soccer Tournament Sunday (Nov. 9) afternoon at Blanchard Woods Park.
The No. 2-ranked Mountain Lions, who also captured the PBC regular season crown, improved to 17-0-1 while the Pacers, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, fell to 14-5-1. Both teams are expected to advance to the 2014 NCAA Division II Tournament next week. The announcement of the national tournament field will be announced by the NCAA at 7:30 p.m. Monday (Nov. 10).
Carballo, who was named to the all-tournament team, scored the match-winner and his ninth goal of the season Khurram Shazad crossed the ball over to Paco Craig, who headed the ball to Carballo near the far post who put it past USC Aiken goalkeeper Joshua Poissant, who stopped 13 shots, into the upper right corner of the net.
"I think this win today shows we have the character to match the ability," said YHC head coach Mark McKeever. "Every time we are thrown into adverse situations, we prove we can handle the pressure and we are willing to work hard and find solutions to new problems. I am hoping the season can continue to be a success.
"I am very proud to be a part of the special season these lads have produced," added McKeever. "I would like to thank everyone at the college for the great support we have had from the students to the faculty and staff to our administration and finally our president who came to support us at the final today! I also want to say a very special thank you to my staff - Dean Grey, Niall McCabe and Jordan Bell - who have made this season more professional than I have ever witnessed at a collegiate soccer program."
Young Harris, which held a 22-10 margin on shot, including a 17-6 advantage in the second half and overtime, had three solid changes to win the match in regulation. Shazad and Ilija Ilic, who was named the tournament's MVP, had shots cleared off the line by a Pacer defender midway through the second half and Shazad had another opportunity hit the crossbar in the waning moments of regulation. USC Aiken had its best chance to score when Noel Mais' blast was turned away by YHC goalkeeper Jordan Bradshaw, who had four saves, at the 72:22 mark.
In addition to Ilic and Carballo, Lewis Hilton and Samuel Mansour were named to the all-tournament team from the Mountain Lions.
