YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Lynn University scored four times in the second half to rally for a 4-1 decision over Young Harris College in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championship on a rainy, windy Sunday (Nov. 23) afternoon at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
Lynn, which is ranked No. 3 nationally and the No. 1 seed from the South Region, improved to 17-1-1 and advances to the semifinals in Louisville, Kentucky, Dec. 4.
Young Harris, which is ranked No. 2 nationally and the No. 1 seed from the Southeast Region, ended the best season in its program's history with a 19-1-1 ledger in its first NCAA tournament appearance. It also marked the final game in an YHC uniform for seniors Ilija Ilic, Khurram Shazad and Samuel Mansour, who led the Mountain Lions to 59 wins in their illustrious careers.
Young Harris jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Lewis Hilton scored his seventh goal of the year on a free kick from just outside the box at the 9:00 mark. Young Harris, which outshot the Knights 8-4 in the first half, had several opportunities to double its lead but couldn't capitalize on them.
After a 45-minute lightning delay in the early moments of the second half, Lynn tied the match at 1 at the 63:12 mark as Chris Hellmann scored the first of his two goals on the day. Hellmann, who has 24 on the year, got a through ball from teammate Nicolas Mortensen down the left side of the field and scored from 12 yards out.
Mortensen gave the Knights the lead for good 74 seconds later at 2-1 as he collected a loose ball at the top of the box after the Mountain Lions had trouble clearing the ball out their end. It was Mortensen's ninth strike of 2014. The Knights added two insurance goals from Lukas Zlatartis and Hellmann in a 74-second span to take a 4-1 lead at the 77:19 mark.
Lynn held a 13-12 advantage in shots. Lucas Fancello stopped six shots for Lynn in goal while Jordan Bradshaw had four for the Mountain Lions.
