Seniors shine for Mountain Lions in 5-1 win against Lander on Senior Night

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Young Harris College got four goals from seniors Ilija Ilic and Khurram Shazad as the Mountain Lions defeated Lander University 5-1 in a Peach Belt Conference men's soccer match on Senior Night Wednesday (Oct. 22) evening at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.

The No. 5-ranked Mountain Lions, who were also ranked No.1 in the Southeast Region in the first NCAA Regional Rankings released earlier in the day, improved to 11-0-1 overall and to 6-0-0 in the Peach Belt. The Bearcats slipped to 6-5-1 and 2-4-1. Young Harris wraps up its regular season with three road contests, starting Saturday (Oct. 25) with a 1:30 p.m. PBC match at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.

Young Harris, which outshot Lander 27-6 (15-3 on goal), broke through with two goals three minutes apart late in the first half. Paco Craig scored his sixth goal of the season when he headed in his own miss at the 34:08 mark. Ilic, who leads the Peach Belt with 13 goals, scored the first of three goals when he converted a rebound of a Craig missed shot at the 37:30 mark.

Shazad added his 10th strike of 2014 when he beat the Lander goalkeeper 10 minutes into the second half as knocked the ball into the right corner of the net. Ilic added a penalty kick at the 62:41 mark after an YHC player was fouled in the box. Ilic wrapped up the YHC scoring seven minutes later when he headed in a cross from Andre Johansson from the right side.

Lander got its goal at the 71:08 mark when Zach Acree headed a ball into the net at the far post after Kioki Hutchings sent the ball into the box. It was Acree's third goal of the season.

Jordan Bradshaw and Anton Víden each had one save for the Mountain Lions while Barrett Nielson (seven) and Landon Uldrick (nine) combined to stop nine for the Bearcats.

Prior to the match, the Mountain Lions honored and recognized their three seniors – Ilic, Shazad and starting defender Samuel Mansour.
