AIKEN, S.C. – Niall McCabe scored the deciding goal in the 74th minute as No. 24 Young Harris College held off the University of South Carolina Aiken in a 3-2 Peach Belt Conference men's soccer match Wednesday (Sept. 25) evening at the Pacer Pit.
The Mountain Lions improved to 5-1-0 overall and to 2-0-0 in the Peach Belt while the Pacers fell to 2-4-1 and 0-1-0. Young Harris returns to action Saturday (Sept. 28) at 7:30 p.m. when they face Flagler College in St. Augustine, Fla.
With the match tied at 2, McCabe took it across the field and knocked it into the left side of the goal with 16:31 remaining in the match for his fourth goal of 2013.
Young Harris had taken a 2-0 lead late in the first half with two goals in just over a two minute span. Paco Craig scored at the 39:12 mark off a McCabe cross. It was Craig's second goal of the season. Ilic scored his team-high sixth goal 2:22 later when he converted a William Schonfeldt corner kick. Ilic has scored a goal in each match for the Mountain Lions.
USC Aiken scored 9:24 into the second half on Sajih Daychoum's header off a direct kick by teammate Jason King. The Pacers added a goal 15 minutes later to tie the match at 2 when Noel Mais tapped it in after a long pass down the field from Gabriel Locher.
The Pacers held a 16-15 advantage in shots, but the Mountain Lions led 10-6 for shots on goal. USC Aiken's Joshua Poissant recorded seven saves while Pedro Ozi notched four for Young Harris.
