MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Lewis Hilton scored 1:59 into the second overtime as Young Harris College took a 1-0 Peach Belt Conference victory over the University of Montevallo in a men's soccer match Saturday (Oct. 27) afternoon at Varsity Field.
The Mountain Lions improved to 13-4-1 overall and to 5-3-1 in the Peach Belt. With the win, Young Harris clinches the No. 4 seed in the upcoming conference tournament this week and will host No. 5 seed University of North Carolina at Pembroke Tuesday (Oct. 30) in a 2 p.m. quarterfinal match at the Frances Wood Wilson Soccer Field. The Falcons finished the regular season at 10-4-2 overall and at 6-2-1 in the league to earn the No. 2 seed in the tournament.
Following a shot off the post by Ilija Ilic on a free kick in front of the Montevallo net, Hilton fired a rebound attempt past Falcons' goalkeeper Brendan Ledgeway to clinch the victory. It was the sixth goal of the campaign for the freshman from Newquay, England. It was the third time in the match that the Mountain Lions hit either the crossbar or post.
Young Harris goalkeeper Wezly Barnard recorded his second shutout as he turned away five shots while Ledgeway also tallied five saves.
"This was a great result for our program," said Young Harris head coach Mark McKeever. "I feel we deserved the win as we put a lot of pressure on their goal. We hit the post and crossbar in regular time and when it happened a third time I felt this wasn't going to be our night. However, Lewis Hilton's awareness allowed him to be the quickest to react and score the goal. Our boys worked tirelessly and our defense really came together to get a shutout."
