BREVARD, N.C. – Young Harris College scored two second-half goals as the Mountain Lions shut out Brevard College 2-0 in a women's soccer match Wednesday (Oct. 19) afternoon at the BC Soccer Field.
The Mountain Lions improved to 9-3-1 while the Tornados fell to 2-12-0. Young Harris returns to action Sunday (Oct. 23) when they travel to Thomasville, Ga., for a noon match against Thomas (Ga.) University.
The teams battled to a scoreless draw in the first half before Emily Villas found a gap in the BC defense off a pass from Mika Lopes, putting it in the bottom left corner to put Young Harris up 1-0 at the 62:58 mark. It was Villas' fifth goal of 2011.
Haley Holderfield added to the lead at the 74:53 mark, receiving a through ball from Villas and tapped the ball into the back of the net to give the Mountain Lions the 2-0 lead. It was Holderfield's team-high eighth goal of the season.
Goalkeepers Kelsey Cunningham and Gabby Smith combined on Young Harris' seventh shutout of the season as they turned away 10 shots. Cunningham had seven stops while Smith collected three.
