Mountain Lions cruise past St. Catharine

YOUNG HARRIS - Emily Villas recorded a half trick and Rachel Wilkes had a pair of goals as the Young Harris College women’s soccer team blanked St. Catharine College, 6-0, Sunday afternoon.

Wilkes opened the scoring in the 13th minute as the ball deflected off Patriots goalkeeper Lindsey Vinson gloves and right to Wilkes, whose shot broke the 0-0 tie.

A minute later, Villas recorded her first goal on a header to the back post off a corner kick by Kelley Lyness to give the Mountain Lions a 2-0 advantage.

Young Harris (1-1), which out-shot St. Catharine, 31-6, added to the total in the 34th minute as Wilkes found the back of the net for the second time as she took the pass from Villas and beat Vinson with a chip to the far post for the third goal of the day.

The Mountain Lions, who led 3-0 at the half, got the fourth goal of the game in the 50th minute as Villas scored her second of the game from a shot about 35 yards out. Her third goal came just a minute later with a header off an assist by Lyness as that tandem teamed up on the corner kick for the second time in the game.

The Mountain Lions got an unassisted goal by Lauren Martin in the 55th minute as her shot was chipped over and to the far post to put the game away.

Allie Matulia started in goal for Young Harris, recording one save while Gabby Smith had a pair as the two each played a half. Vinson finished with seven saves before being injured. Kelsie Shumaker had four as the Patriots fell to 1-2-1.
