Young Harris, St. Catharine battle to scoreless draw

YOUNG HARRIS – It was a game for missed opportunities Sunday for the Young Harris College men’s soccer team as the Mountain Lions tied St. Catharine College, 0-0.

The first half was dominated by Young Harris (0-1-1), but the Mountain Lions couldn’t get past St. Catharine goalkeeper Adam Gillcrist.

The best opportunity for the Mountain Lions came in the 40th minute when Victor Rodriguez’s shot banged off the post, keeping the game tied at 0.

Young Harris out-shot St. Catharine in the first half, 12-1, and had a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.

The second half saw the action open up a bit as both teams had chances to break the 0-0 tie.

In the 76th minute St. Catharine forward Samuel Kpoh broke free down the left side and his shot hit the left post. Just 10 minutes later, it was the Mountain Lions’ chance. After a foul had been given just outside the penalty area, Niall McCabe’s shot hit the crossbar.

Andreas Pechmann had two looks at the goal in the overtime periods, but his shot’s were off target as the game ended with a 0-0 draw.

Wezley Barnard had three saves for the Mountain Lions, while Gillcrist finished with eight.

Young Harris remains home and returns to action 5:00 p.m., Friday, Sept. 10 against Christian Brothers University.
