SALISBURY, N.C. – Marisa Martelli scored three goals but it wasn't enough as Catawba College defeated Young Harris College 15-8 in a women's lacrosse match Sunday (April 6) afternoon.
The Indians won their third consecutive game as they improved to 7-6 while the Mountain Lions fell to 1-14. Young Harris will close out its regular season with two home matches, beginning Saturday (April 12) with a 1 p.m. match against Shorter University at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
Nicolette Salay scored two quick goals to give Catawba a 2-0 lead after just two and half minutes. Young Harris rallied back to make a game of it early. Three straight goals – Kaylynn Roach, Jaclyn Kernohan and Martelli - gave the guests a 3-2 edge midway through the first half.
The Indians scored the final four goals of the half, beginning and ending on tallies from Meredith Jones to lead 6-3 at the break. Catawba continued its run in the second half as the lead ballooned to 14-3 with 11:35 remaining. Alyssa Corace had three of the eight goals the Indians scored before Young Harris broke the stretch of 12 unanswered goals.
The Mountain Lions scored five of the final six goals, including two more from Martelli. Roach had two goals and an assist for the Mountain Lions, while Kernohan also scored a pair of goals. Ivey Franklin accounted for the other Mountain Lion score while Jordana Freitas tallied two assists.
Kernohan and Franklin each had two draw controls while Roach and Freitas had one apiece. Kernohan, Freitas and Sarah Nudelman each scooped up three ground balls while Franklin and Jade Smith had two each.
Nudelman had 11 saves in goal for the Mountain Lions.
