Valkyries hold off Mountain Lions 12-7
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Marisa Martelli scored three goals but it wasn't enough as Converse College defeated Young Harris College 12-7 in a women's lacrosse match Friday (March 21) evening at Hayden Abney Fulp Field.
The Valkyries improved to 5-6 while the Mountain Lions fell to 1-11. Young Harris returns to the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field Sunday (March 23) for a 2 p.m. match against Newberry College.
Converse scored the first five goals of the match before the Mountain Lions scored three of the next four goals to pull within 6-3 after Martelli scored off an Ivey Franklin assist with 10:26 remaining in the half.
The Valkyries took a 9-4 lead at the half, but the teams got defensive in the second half as each team only score three times.
The Mountain Lions got goals from Kaylynn Roach, Caitlin Pardus, Franklin and Jaclyn Kernohan. Pardus and Roach also recorded an assist. Young Harris won five draw controls – three by Jordana Freitas and two by Roach. The Mountain Lions scooped up 13 ground balls. Roach led the team with three while Anna Lummus collected two.
Sarah Nudelman had nine saves in goal for the Mountain Lions.
