Mountain Lions dominate Brevard 20-4

BREVARD, N.C. – Young Harris College had eight different players find the back of the net as Young Harris College defeated Brevard College 20-4 in a non-conference women's lacrosse victory Tuesday (Feb. 25) afternoon at the Brevard Lacrosse Field.

The Mountain Lions tied a college-record with the 20 goals scored as they improved to 1-3 while the Tornados fell to 0-2. Young Harris will host Lenoir-Rhyne University in a 2 p.m. match Saturday (March 1) at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.

Kaylynn Roach and Marisa Martelli led the scoring parade with four goals each while Jaclyn Kernohan, Ivey Franklin and Jordana Freitas each tallied three goals. Breanna Farmer, Stephanie Wright and Jessica DuBose accounted for one goal each. Roach also paced the Mountain Lions with three assists while Franklin, Kernohan and Martelli each had one.

Young Harris, which outshot Brevard 41-10, took command of the match as they scored four of the first five goals. After Brevard got back-to-back goals from Madison Ellis to pull within 7-4 with 8:19 remaining in the first half, the Young Harris defense clamped down as they didn't allow another goal the remainder of the first half and the entire second half – a scoreless stretch of 38:19. While the defense was silencing the Tornado attack, the Mountain Lions closed out the match by scoring the final 13 goals.

The Mountain Lions held a 23-12 advantage in ground balls. Farmer led Young Harris with six and Kernohan added five more. Freitas and Franklin each added three ground balls while Martelli and Roach had two more.  Young Harris won 15 of the 24 draw controls contested with Freitas leading the way with seven and Jade Smith adding four more.
