YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Coker College used a big first half to hold off a second-half rally by Young Harris College as the Cobras defeated the Mountain Lions 15-5 in a non-conference women's lacrosse match Saturday (Feb. 22) afternoon at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
Coker improved to 1-1 while the Mountain Lions fell to 0-3. Young Harris will look for its first win of the season Tuesday (Feb. 25) when they travel to Brevard, N.C., for a 4 p.m. contest against Brevard College.
The Cobras jumped out to a 9-0 lead at the half, before Young Harris scored the first two goals of the second half – both by Jaclyn Kernohan - to cut the deficit to 9-2 with 25:37 to play. Coker only outscored the Mountain Lions 6-5 in the final 30 minutes. Kernohan added another strike midway through the second half before Jordana Freitas scored twice in the final six minutes off Kernohan passes.
Coker held slight advantages in shots (31-17), ground balls (19-16) and draw controls (14-8). Marisa Martelli led the Mountain Lions with six ground balls while Breanna Farmer and Kernohan each had two. Kernohan also caused three Coker turnovers and led the Mountain Lions with four draw controls.
Sarah Nudelman had nine saves in net for the Mountain Lions.
