YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Samantha Burns scored five goals as Erskine College spoiled the home opener for the Young Harris College women's lacrosse team as the Flying Fleet defeated the Mountain Lions 19-2 Wednesday (Feb. 19) afternoon at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
Erskine improved to 2-0 while Young Harris fell to 0-2. Young Harris returns to action with a 1 p.m. match Saturday (Feb. 22) when the Mountain Lions host Coker College.
Young Harris recorded its goals in the second half as Jaclyn Kernohan score back-to-back goals a minute apart. Kernohan converted a free-position shot with 21:51 remaining and followed up 64 seconds later when she scored off a pass from teammate Ivey Franklin.
Young Harris had 11 shots on the day and picked up 15 ground balls. Kernohan and Caitlin Pardus each had three grounds ball while Breanna Farmer and Anna Lummus had two apiece. Erskine held a slim lead in draw controls over the Mountain Lions 13-10. Jordana Freitas and Kernohan each had three draw controls for Young Harris while Marisa Martelli had two. The Mountain Lions also caused eight turnovers – three by Kernohan and two each for Freitas and Pardus.
